2 of my most favorite guilty pleasures are only better on blu ray(duh....); Both are films that generally went overlooked in many ways w/the exception of the fanbases for each; Boyscout def has the edge humor-wise(an actual great 'buddy' picture....Damon Wayans is very funny, & Shane Black can write a wicked screenplay....), but visually, Last Man Standing has the edge. Detailed and crisp, it is how this movie was made to be seen. And the gun sounds are even more amazing here. Walter Hill has generally been overlooked as a filmmaker I think, and while some people thought this was a little 'slow', I had no problem w/the pacing. Ry Cooder scores this movie perfectly too...
This is a great disc of 2 classic, lesser seen Bruce Willis movies, each of which contain lots and lots of welcome familiar faces. I know many times these 'double feature' discs stick a lemon w/something decent, but in this case(in my opinion...), you kill 2 birds with one stone...2 modern 'classics' on... Read more

This Blu-Ray transfer is excellent! Years ago, when I bought The Last Boyscout on DVD, I was very disappointed. The picture quality was horrible. It was very grainy. It was better to just watch it on a VHS tape. The DVD quality was that bad. (If you ever bought The Last Boyscout on DVD, you know what I'm talking about!) So, I'm glad that this Blu-Ray edition of The Last Boyscout finally gives the movie justice in terms of picture quality.
The movie itself -- if you are a Bruce Willis fan, or an action fan in general, and for whatever reason that you haven't watched this yet -- go buy this movie! It's an excellent action movie that I have watched over and over!

This double bill (just like in the old days) features Bruce Willis with two of his 1990s hits, "Last Boy Scout" (1991) and "Last Man Standing" (1996). The films share not only Bruce and the word "last" in the title but they also share the 90s style action film genre.
"Last Boy Scout" is the better of the pair, a 5 star flick, with good action, some of the snappiest dialogue you'll ever hear in films, a cute little girl who steals the show, and an over-the-top ending filled with death, destruction, and fireworks. There's even a little sex, with such hot ladies as Halle Berry and Chelsea Field. Add to that some great performances from Bruce Willis, his partner Damon Wayans, Danielle Harris as Willis' little girl, Noble Willingham as Wayans' sleazy ex-boss, and Taylor Negron as the dangerous Mr. Milo. Really - a classic 5 star flick that shouldn't be missed.

Shiba (Tetsuro Tanba) is a wandering samurai who's seen it all. He stumbles onto some peasants who have taken the magistrate's daughter hostage in hopes of ending the corruptive leadership that plagues their land. What begins as a spectator sport and a roof over his head for Shiba turns into him fully supporting the peasants and their cause. Two other samurai; Sakura (Isamu Nagato) another wanderer with a guilty conscience and Kikyo (Mikijiro Hira) a samurai who milks the magistrate for all he's worth eventually join up with Shiba. An epic duel to the death lies ahead for the three samurai as the magistrate will stop at nothing to get revenge.

In my collection of samurai movies this is number one. Once in a while a movie achieves that balance between action and story. This is it. It's not to high brow, not over action. All in beautiful black and white. I had hoped Criterion Collection would catch notice of this movie and they have. Can't go wrong with this one.

Caught this movie on either IFC or the Sundance channels "Samurai Saturdays" where they would show subtitled Japanese samurai movies at 5am in the morning. As a fan of Samurai movies like Yojimbo and The Lone Wolf & Cub movies I was shocked I had never heard of the film before it aired on the channel. After seeing it I payed way too much for a Japan region version of the film online and enjoyed it ever since.
So glad this film is getting a Criterion release and will hopefully finally get its deserved recognition by samurai movie fans in the west.

In spite of having to read many negative reviews, I was still curious to see this movie. I not a huge Burton fan neither, although I've enjoyed some of his previous work. But it was something about �Alice in Wonderland� which seemed appealing; its visual look and its quirky characters. Still I had in mind the several hostile reviews, which accused this movie to be a flat, soulless and muddled attempt of a classic, which I also feared it would. But after finally seeing the movie, I can claim my disagreement with the reviewers. In fact, I'm not sure if we even saw the same movie. What exactly was so terrible about it?
Overall, I found �Alice in Wonderland� to be very entertaining. I feared that the movie would lose some of it's magic as the main character entered to Wonderland, but fortunately it never did. For starters, it seems that everyone I know is shocked when I tell them that this Alice in Wonderland is a sequel of sorts. At the age of 19 and about to be forced into marriage, this is Alice's second trip to Wonderland. I'm glad Tim Burton and his team came up with a new story that still featured all the great characters from the original source material. That's also where the weakest part of the movie lies. The dialogue given to the characters is great, but the script is razor thin. I think if more effort went into this particular aspect, I might have given it five stars.
I saw it in IMAX 3-D and the visuals are as grand and beautiful as you would expect from Burton. It's not quite as eye-popping as Avatar, which was shot completely in IMAX 3-D, whereas, Alice in Wonderland was upconverted (Clash of the Titans did the same thing to bad effect). The music by Danny Elfman is some of his best stuff in recent years and the costumes/makeup are top notch.
